Kats lead after Day 1 of Bentwater Intercollegiate

MONTGOMERY – The Sam Houston men's golf team opened the spring portion of its season on Monday and will head into the final day of the Bentwater Intercollegiate presented by Huntsville Toyota with a 4-shot lead after 36 holes of play. Â
The Bearkats shot -6 in Round 1 and dropped another seven shots in Round 2 to close the day at -13, four shots better than Midland College, the top-ranked team in the nation in the junior college ranks. Bret Gray and Hugo Trommetter each shot -3 for the day, two shots off the individual pace set by Abilene Christian's Preston Cooper. Â
Gray opened a cool morning red hot, birdying two of his first three holes and closing with three more scores on the back side to jump out to a tie for the tournament lead after 18 holes with a 67. Trommetter went 70-69 on his scorecards.Â
They were not the only Kats to finish the day under par as Ethan Dufresne and Gene Chaikangwal each closed at –2 through 36 holes. Dufresne turned in 70-70 on his rounds on the Par 71 course, while Chaikangwal's day was anchored by an opening round of 69. Â
The low round of the day came from Alex Malanga, who followed up a 73 in Round 1 with a 67 in Round 2, tallying eight birdies in the round. Â
Meanwhile, defending tournament individual champion Josh German finished at even par with consecutive rounds of 71. giving the Bearkats a 2-shot lead over Southeastern Louisiana as the teams made the turn to the afternoon. Â
Individual play saw Daniel Moon finish at +6 after rounds of 78-70 and Sebastian May at +8 after going 73-77.Â
Play for the final round of the Bentwater Intercollegiate is set to begin at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.Â
