Bearkats take title at Bulldog Classic

FORT WORTH — Sam Houston fell in a hole early against Louisiana Tech but was able to regroup and clinch the championship at the Bulldog Classic on Sunday.

The Bearkats were down 2-1 after losing to straight to the Bulldogs after winning game one to open championship play. Sam Houston then won 244-187, 223-147 to reclaim the lead before taking the seventh and decisive game 209-179 to advance.

The Kats followed with a sweep of Jackson State 215-118, 180-173, 172-167 and 190-169 to setup another match with LA Tech for the title. Sam Houston didn't waste time in the rematch, knocking off the Bulldogs 189-159, 174-170, 210-135 and 233-173 for another convincing sweep.

"We went into today's match play with a game plan that you can only execute more so during match play due to the additional warmup time in between each new round and thankfully it worked every round," head coach Brad Hagen said. "Anytime you can formulate a game plan that's fun, makes sense, everyone buys into it, and we execute it, makes the adventure fun.

"Nothing is more rewarding as a coach when they buy in, and you see the light bulb go off."

The Sam Houston bowling program also has now won over 1,200 matches in the program's history following the Bulldog Classic.
