LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Two fast goals proved to be the right combination to lead Sam Houston to a 2-2 tie with NM State on Saturday evening.
The Bearkats (3-3-2) and Aggies opened Conference USA play for the second straight season but the outcome was different this time around. Sam Houston defeated the Aggies 3-2 in the opener last season.
Kelsey Villatoro got the Kats off to a solid start when she scored her first goal of the season off an assist from
Ellie Morgan. It came just six minutes into the match.
The scoreboard only stayed that way for 12 more minutes.
Sam Houston went up 2-0 in the 18th minute on a goal by
Tiana Johnson. She put the Bearkats up 2-0 with the help of
Kinsey Hill and
Taylor Vance.
NM State added a goal to trim the lead to 1 less than a minute later and tied the match with another score late in the second half.
Sam Houston finally returns home after four matches on the road when the Bearkats host Louisiana Tech at Pritchett Field on Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.
