HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston will go after its first midweek victory of the year on Tuesday when it travels to Houston to battle HCU at Husky Field.
Tuesday's game can watched on ESPN+ with Nicholas Pietrzycki on the call. Games can also be followed via Statbroadcast or by following @BearkatsBSB on Instagram and X.
The Bearkats are coming off a series win at McNeese on Opening Weekend, taking the final two games from the Cowboys after dropping an 11-inning heartbreaker on Friday night.
Â
The Kats' offense came out hot on the first weekend, led by Ryan Franden who was named the CUSA Hitter of the Week on Monday after hitting three homers and driving in nine runs in the series. In all, the Kats hit .301 as a team for the weekend with 11 extra-base hits.
Â
They also got strong starting pitching with each of the three Bearkat starters logging 5.0 innings and leaving with leads. In all the Kats struck out 32 hitters in 28.1 innings of mound time, featuring seven new arms.
Â
Lefty newcomer Jakob Holzer threw 2.0 innings of relief in the season opener and is scheduled to get his first start as a Bearkat on Tuesday in Houston. He'll be opposed by Husky righty Jett Feltman, who will be making his first appearance of the young season. Feltman will be beginning his third year with the club and even earned the win in relief in last year's Husky win over the Bearkats in Huntsville.
SERIES vs the HUSKIES
- SHSU leads the all-time series 57-17, including owning an 18-9 record in Houston
- The Bearkats and Huskies have played every year since 2008 except for the 2021 and 2013 seasons
Â
- This will be the first trip for SHSU to HCU since 2019 and the first time the Kats and Huskies have ever squared off under the lights at Husky Field. HCU is in its second season of being able to hold night games on its home turf, adding lights to its stadium prior to the 2025 season
QUICK HITTERS
- The series win at McNeese was the first time the Bearkats have won a true road series on Opening Weekend since going 2-0 at UT Pan American on the first weekend of the 1998 season. It is the first time in program history they have won a true road series on Opening Weekend of three or more games
- The Kats showcased seven new pitchers on Opening Weekend including freshmen Collin Aloisio, Mason Murphy and Cooper Harris. The trio combined to allow only five runs in 10.0 innings with 14 strikeouts and five walks over the three games
- The weekend saw Ryan Peterson, Tyler Ryden and Collin Aloisio each log 5.0 innings in their starts. It marked the first time the Kats had each of their first three starting pitchers of the year go at least 5.0 innings since the COVID-shortened 2020 season when Tyler Davis, Matt Dillard and Dominic Robinson did so vs Saint Mary's
- The Kats will be gunning for their first 4-1 start to a season since 2022 when they won three of four games from Nebraska and took a midweek from No. 4 Oklahoma State to kick off the year
