Bearkat bats stay quiet in 2-1 loss to Flames

HUNTSVILLE – For the second straight game the Sam Houston offense was stymied by UIC's pitching staff as the Bearkats dropped a 2-1 decision to the Flames on Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium.
The game was nearly a carbon copy of Friday's 2-0 UIC (3-3) win with the Flames scraping across a pair of early runs and then making them stand up the rest of the way behind strong pitching. Lefty starter Brandon Bak logged 7.0 innings for the Flames to earn his first win of 2026, striking out five while allowing just one run and no walks.
That effort negated a solid start from Tyler Ryden who took the loss after going 4.1 innings with four strikeouts and two runs allowed before turning it over to the pen. Jonathan Anders entered and worked out of an immediate jam in the fifth before logging 2.2 innings, retiring all eight hitters he faced. Zak Johson and Kade Neuenschwander each also logged scoreless innings of relief.
The only runs of the game for the Flames came in the top of the second when UIC got a 2-run single from Lucas Smith. The Kats cut it in half with an RBI double by Hunter Alvord in the third to score Caleb Cotton, but Sam Houston only reached base one more time the rest of the way as UIC's pitching staff retired the final 14 hitters they faced to close the game.
UP NEXT
The Bearkats will attempt to avoid a sweep on Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium. First pitch is set for noon with right-hander Collin Aloisio slated to go for SHSU. The game can be heard online on the Bearkat Sports Network.
