HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats scored six times in the bottom of the seventh to come back and pull out a 7-5 win over UT Arlington on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Kats (12-12) trailed 4-1 entering the inning, but got three consecutive run-scoring doubles from Jeric Curtis, Ryan Franden and Hunter Alvord to surge ahead in what is the biggest single inning of the season so far for Sam Houston.
All nine Bearkat hitters reached base on Tuesday with seven players accounting for nine hits, including two apiece from Franden and Sean Bazmore. On the mound, Noah Noah Kendrick made his first start of the year but logged just 2.2 innings before being lifted.
Meanwhile, Cooper Harris earned his first collegiate win with three strikeouts and one run allowed in 2.1 frames of work. Zak Johnson closed the door once again, retiring three of the four hitters he faced with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the year.
The Mavs (8-16), on the other hand, were in great shape, going up 4-1 thru six innings on the strength of a 3-run third and another run in the top of the sixth. But UTA could not get out of sixth as it used four pitchers in the inning, including Jacob Gabler who took the loss after being charged with four runs without recording an out.
Sam Houston had gotten its first run of the game home in the third on a grounder by Caleb Cotton, but sent 11 hitters to the plate in the seventh before Cotton ended it with a tough-luck double-play line drive with the bases loaded.
He and Jace Martinez had drawn walks to set the table in the decisive inning, which was followed by a trio of doubles to put the Kats ahead 5-4. Wes Baker brought another home with a sac fly and Martinez walked for a second time in the inning, this time with the bases loaded to bring in Cade Corcoran with the final run.
UP NEXTSam Houston will next host WKU for three games beginning Friday at Don Sanders Stadium. All games can be heard on the Bearkat Sports Network and followed via Statbroadcast.
