HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston's 4-game homestand continues this weekend when it hosts WKU for another CUSA series, beginning Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
All games on the weekend can be heard on the Bearkat Sports Network online with Carlos Zimmermann on the call. It can also be followed via live stats on Statbroadcast. Fans are also encouraged to follow @BearkatsBSB on X and Instagram.
The Bearkats have won four of their last five games and will be looking for their second straight CUSA series victory after taking two of three at FIU a week ago. The Kats and Hilltoppers share both common opponents through the first two weeks of CUSA play with both suffering a sweep at the hands of Jax State and winning series from FIU.
Sam Houston has had its success primarily on the strength of its pitching staff, which boasts a 4.61 ERA as a team, a mark good enough for second in CUSA. The staff is fronted by junior right-hander Ryan Peterson who continues to impress, leading Conference USA with 51 strikeouts after having punched out at least eight hitters in each of his last five starts.
The Kats will shake up the weekend rotation with Tyler Ryden slated to get the start in the second game of the series. Ryden made weekend starts in each of the season's first three weeks and is coming off a brilliant relief stint on Saturday at FIU where he shut the Panthers out in 5.1 innings with six strikeouts.
Offensively, Cade Corcoran has reached base in 14 straight games and Caleb Cotton carries a team-best 5-game hit streak into the weekend; however, it has been the speed of the Kats that has wreaked havoc on opposing defenses this year as the Kats have a CUSA-best 65 steals for the season with Jeric Curtis leading the way with 15.
WKU put together a historical season in 2025, winning 46 games on its way to the CUSA Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Oxford Regional. This season the new-look Hilltoppers are off to a 14-11 start and have split a pair of sweeps within the league, but most recently knocked off Louisville in Bowling Green in a Tuesday midweek.
Lane Arroyos leads the offense, ranking in the top 10 in CUSA in average (.362), slugging (.638), on-base percentage (.483), hits (34), RBI (28), doubles (11) and walks (21). The Tops will shake up their rotation as well, moving left-hander Aaron Robertson to Game 1 while pushing righty Gavin Perry to Sunday and adding right-hander Nathan Lawson to the rotation in Game 2 where he will make his second start of the season.
