HUNTSVILLE – Ryan Peterson went the distance in leading the Sam Houston Bearkats to a 1-0 win over WKU on Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
Peterson had never logged more than 7.0 innings in his career but carded all 27 outs to earn the first complete-game shutout for the Bearkats (13-12, 3-4 CUSA) since Opening Night in 2017 when Heath Donica struck out 14 hitters in a 1-hit shutout of Nevada.
The junior right-hander struck out the side in the first inning and went on to allow only an infield single in sixth inning in a 1-hit, complete-game shutout of the Hilltoppers (14-12, 3-4 CUSA). His six total punchouts was his least since finishing with in the season opener at McNeese, but he produced weak contact throughout the night and finished with an efficient 111 total pitches used.
Even with the effort, the Kats still needed to scratch the scoreboard to log their fifth win in the last six outings and did just that when Hunter Alvord blasted a 1-0 pitch out to left field in the bottom of the seventh to provide all the offense Peterson needed.
The blast was one of six hits for the Bearkat offense and came against reliever Mick Uebelhor who suffered his first loss of the year. He entered in the sixth after starter Aaron Robertson logged 5.0 shutout innings with two hits, two strikeouts and his first three walks of the season.
Peterson moved to 3-3 on the year with the win, logging 5.1 innings of a no-hit bid until an infield hit by Hayden Robbins in the sixth. It was one of six innings in which Peterson worked around a man on base, including a dicey ninth.
With the Kats up 1-0, Kyle Hayes and Camden Ross drew back-to-back 1-out walks to pose an immediate threat to Peterson's gem. But Peterson was able to bear down and got both JP Acosta and Hayden Nazarenus to weakly ground out to the right side of the infield to leave the go-ahead and winning runs in scoring position.
UP NEXTSam Houston look to clinch the series with WKU on Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium with right-hander Tyler Ryden set to get the start. All games on the weekend can be heard on the Bearkat Sports Network and followed via Statbroadcast.
