HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston took game one against Missouri State with a 5-0 sweep Friday night at the Bearkat Softball Complex. Â
The Bearkats (26-18, 10-6 CUSA) took an early lead in the first inning on an RBI double from Veronica Harrison that scored Sophia Lundstrom. Harrison extended the lead in the third with a solo home run — her 15th of the season — setting a program record. Â
In the fifth, the Bearkats capitalized on a Bears (17-21, 5-11 CUSA) error from the center fielder to push another run across. Peyton Helmly followed with a squeeze bunt to bring home an additional run. Â
Jordan Peno added to the lead in the sixth with a solo homer, her third of the season, sealing the 5-0 victory. Â
Pitcher Tiffany Sanchez threw her sixth conference shutout of the season, matching her season high with nine strikeouts. She limited Missouri State to just two hits and issued no walks. Â
Harrison and Bella Perez each recorded two hits, with Harrison driving in two runs to lead the team. Â
Sam Houston continues the series Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex. Game times are subject to change due to weather.Â
