HUNTSVILLE – Middle Tennessee homered five times and erased a 3-run deficit to even its series with Sam Houston with a 12-8 win over the Bearkats on Saturday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium.

The Bearkats (19-24, 8-12 CUSA) had won five games in a row and held a 5-2 lead after four innings on the strength of home runs from Nathan Fink and Wes Baker, but the Blue Raiders (22-21, 9-11 CUSA) immediately responded with four runs in the top half of the fifth before ultimately taking the lead for good an inning later.

Tyler Ryden looked solid thru the first four frames before running into trouble and handing it off to Connor Mondey who took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the fifth on an RBI single Owen Nowak. That came after the Blue Raiders had homered once in the fourth and two times in the fifth.

The Kats had tied the game at 6-6 on a double-play grounder off the bat of Jeric Curtis, but MTSU reliever Gavin King was unphased and proceeded to go 4.1 innings of relief with eight strikeouts, shutting the Kats out until a 2-run home run by Ryan Franden in the ninth inning to earn his third win of the year.

Franden finished with three hits in the game to lead the Bearkat offense. MTSU, meanwhile, finished with 16 total hits and were led by two home runs and four RBI from Nathan Brewer.

The Kats will look to clinch the series on Sunday in the final game of the series. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. from Don Sanders Stadium and is to be aired on ESPN+.
