HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston used a 6-run fifth inning to push its way to a 9-4 win over Middle Tennessee on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium, clinching the weekend series over the Blue Raiders.
The Bearkats (20-24, 9-12 CUSA) trailed 3-2 in the early going before erupting for equaling its highest-scoring single inning of the season in the fifth behind six hits against a trio of MTSU (22-22, 9-12 CUSA) pitchers.
Cade Corcoran and Hunter Alvord each had 2-run singles in the inning while Ty Marthiljohni added an RBI single and Jace Martinez tripled home a run. It was one of two hits on the day for Corcoran who reached base four total times in the game. Jeric Curtis also had a pair of hits with a double and his first collegiate homer, a solo shot in the eighth to cap the Kats' scoring.
Ryan Franden reached base in three of five plate appearances, walking twice and doubling home two runs in the second inning to tie the game in the early going at 2-2. Kirby Orth joined Curtis, Corcoran and Martinez with two hits on a day that included 12 total hits for the Bearkats.
The effort made a winner of sophomore Tate Hickman who overcame a tough start to earn his first win of the year. Hickman allowed a solo homer to Owen Nowak to open the game and ultimately gave up three runs – two earned – in 6.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts. Freshman Collin Aloisio followed with 3.0 strong innings of relief, punching out two and not walking a batter to earn the save.
Blue Raiders lefty Cole Torbett took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year after giving up five runs in 4.0 frames of work. The Kats also got to reliever Landen Burch for a pair of runs in the 6-run fifth.
