HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats gave No. 4 Texas all it could handle on Tuesday night, but the homestanding Longhorns rallied and got a walk-off home run from Carson Tinney to escape with a 15-14 win at Disch-Falk Field. Â
Sam Houston (20-25) put up its biggest offensive night of the season on one of the biggest stages in the sport, outhitting the Horns (33-9) 14-11 with half being for extra bases. Three were longballs off the bats of freshmen Wes Baker and Kirby Orth who combined for 10 RBI. Â
Baker finished with three hits and homered twice, a grand slam in the third and a 3-run shot in the seventh. He finished with seven total RBI, a new single-game record for a Bearkat freshman. Orth matched him with three hits, singling in his first two at-bats before connecting on a go-ahead, 2-run blast on the second pitch of the top of the ninth to give the Kats a 14-12 lead. Â
But Texas had three outs to play with and took full advantage after having already erased a 6-run deficit earlier in the game. Aiden Robbins, who had already homered earlier in the game, singled home the first run of the frame before Tinney blasted his second home run of the night with one out off Noah Kendrick to give Texas its largest comeback win since the 2022 season.Â
Kendrick took the loss as the final of seven pitchers to take the hill, falling to 1-2 on the year. He had one of eight strikeouts by Bearkat pitching, led by Mason Murphy's three, but the Kats were hampered by 10 walks to Longhorn hitters in the game. Â
Texas, meanwhile, used seven pitchers of their own with reliever Kade Bing backing into his first win of the year after getting the final three outs of the ninth. Â
Nathan Fink turned in a huge game offensively as well, reaching base in all five plate appearances while going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Jeric Curtis also had two hits and a steal, the 100th total swipe of the season for the Bearkat offense. Â
The Bearkats struck early with three runs in the first and five in the third to build the 6-run lead behind starter Jonathan Anders and reliever Connor Mondey. The teams traded runs in before the Longhorns got going, scoring five times in the fifth and three more times in the sixth, before ultimately taking the lead on a 2-run double by Ethan Mendoza. Â
That could have been it for the Kats, but the offense responded loudly when Baker connected against UT reliever Brett Crossland with a 3-run homer which surged Sam Houston back in front 12-11. Â
Mason Murphy entered and struck out two in a scoreless seventh but surrendered a game-tying RBI single to Temo Becerra in the eighth. That mattered little just two pitches into the ninth when Fink doubled on the first pitch of the inning and Orth followed with his loudest swing of the night to put Sam Houston in front 14-12 before the Longhorns ultimately finished it with their own rally in the bottom half of the inning.Â

The Kats will now hit the road for another key CUSA series when they make their first-ever trip to Kennesaw State. All three games from the Peach State are scheduled to be aired on ESPN+.
