MIAMI, Fla. — Sam Houston was swept by FIU in a three-game conference series at FIU Softball Stadium, marking the Bearkats' second conference sweep of the season.Â
The Bearkats (29-23, 13-11 CUSA) fell behind early as the Panthers (32-16, 14-10 CUSA) plated a run in the first inning on a single to right field by Kally Meredith. Both teams remained scoreless through the second inning.Â
Sam Houston responded in the third inning with back-to-back hits from Sophia Lundstrom and Veronica Harrison. Peyton Helmly followed with her 10th home run of the season to give the Bearkats a 3-1 lead. The Kats held FIU scoreless in the bottom half of the inning.Â
FIU cut into the deficit in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Zamya McBurrows while keeping Sam Houston off the board.Â
The Panthers took control in the fifth inning, scoring three runs capitalizing on four Bearkat errors to reclaim the lead. FIU maintained the momentum and held Sam Houston scoreless the rest of the way to secure a 5-3 win and complete the series sweep.Â
The Bearkats will close out conference play at home against Jacksonville State in a three-game series beginning April 30 at the Bearkat Softball Complex.Â
