RUSTON, La. – The 2026 regular season will come to a close for the Sam Houston Bearkats this weekend when it travels to Louisiana Tech for a 3-game series beginning Thursday night at JC Love Field.

Â
With both teams having already clinched a berth in next week's CUSA Tournament in Kennesaw, Ga., this weekend will serve as a final tune-up for the squads and help secure seeding for the 9-team field.
Â
Sam Houston could finish as high as the No. 6 seed, or as low as the No. 9 seed pending results from the weekend. LA Tech, meanwhile, is secured of no lower than the No. 5 seed and could move as high as No. 2 with league-leader Jax State needing just one more victory or a loss by Liberty to clinch the No. 1 seed.
Â
The Kats come into the weekend on a high with wins in three of their last four games after sweeping Delaware over the weekend. But they'll be facing one of the hottest teams in CUSA with the Bulldogs going 16-6 over their last 22 games after recovering from an 8-game losing skid in late March. Â
SERIES vs the BULLDOGS
- LA Tech owns an 11-7 all-time record against the Bearkats, including a 6-2 mark in Ruston
- Sam Houston will be looking for its first series win in Ruston since taking two of three games in 2005
NOTES
- Staff ace Ryan Peterson is on the verge of a pair of milestones as he enters the weekend. Peterson currently leads CUSA with 99 strikeouts and needs one more to become the fifth Kat with 100 Ks in a single season and two more to become the 10th with 200 in a career. SHSU' Division I record for single-season strikeouts is 110 (Hayden Wesneski - 2019) and all-time record is 117 (Albert Choate - 1965)
Â
- Sam Houston enters the weekend with 116 stolen bases on the year. That mark leads CUSA and has the Kats over the century mark in swipes for the second time in 4 seasons. The Kats have only hit the century mark in steals twice since 1987 with 102 steals in both 2017 and 2023. This is the most steals for a Kat squad since getting 128 in 1987. The program record is 150 in 1986
Â
- Jeric Curtis and Hunter Alvord lead the team with 22 and 21 steals apiece, while Jace Martinez and Caleb Cotton are hot on their heels with 19 each. Those totals put the Bearkats on the verge of having four players with 20+ steals for the first time in program history

- The freshman offensive combo of Wes Baker, Cade Corcoran and Kirby Orth has been key to the Kats' offensive production in 2026. The trio has combined for 17Â homers and 81 RBI, by far the most offensive production from a freshman class within CUSA in 2026Â
- Baker (8 HR, 37 RBI) and Corcoran (7 HR, 33 RBI) currently rank Nos. 1 and 2 among CUSA freshmen in homers and RBI, while Baker's eight home runs has pulled him into a tie with Andrew Fregia (2016) for the SHSU single-season freshman record.Â
