KENNESAW, Ga. – The Sam Houston Bearkats could not get things going on Sunday afternoon as the Kennesaw State Owls completed a weekend sweep with a 12-1 win in eight innings at Mickey Dunn Stadium.
The Owls (22-22, 11-13 CUSA) scored in three straight innings in the early going and got a strong start from Harry Cain who shut the Kats (20-28, 9-15 CUSA) out into the seventh with seven strikeouts and no walks to earn his third victory of the year and lead KSU to its second sweep of the Kats (20-28, 9-15 CUSA) in as many years.
Sam Houston mustered just six hits against Owl pitching, led by a pair of singles from Kirby Orth who scored the Kats' lone run on a ground ball in the top of the seventh. Tate Hickman struck out four in 3.0 innings of his start, but he was tagged with his second loss of the season after allowing five runs in that span, including a 3-run homer to Jackson Chirello in the third which broke the game open.
It was Chirello's fourth homer of the weekend and marked the second of three 2-out scoring swings for the Owls in the game. Shamaar McDuffie had a season-high four RBI for KSU and initially gave the Owls the lead with a 2-run single with two outs in the second. Trenton Lyons also delivered an RBI single with two outs in the sixth, while Cooper Williams also had an RBI double in the fourth.
KSU held a 7-1 lead entering the bottom of the eighth and pushed it to 9-1 on McDuffie's second 2-run single of the day. Trenton Lyons then brought the game to a halt with a 3-run blast to right-center field to cap the 5-run inning.
Freshman Zach Alarid was solid in long relief out of the Kats' pen, allowing one run in 2.2 innings on the hill with three strikeouts.
