Lamar downs Kats in shootout

It was the second consecutive 15-14 loss on a Tuesday night for the Bearkats (20-29) and their fourth 1-run loss in their last five outings.
Cade Corcoran and Wes Baker each homered in the first inning and helped the Kats build up a 10-0 lead after just three innings. But Lamar put up four in the fourth and five more in the fifth, ultimately going ahead with a 4-run seventh inning.
Sam Houston tied it up with single runs in the seventh and eighth, but winning pitcher Gage Burdick did not allow a hit in the final 3.2 innings for his first win of the year, recording five of the 16 strikeouts put up by Cardinal pitching in the game.
The teams combined to use 19 pitchers in the game and the Cardinals finished with that number of hits, including a trio of home runs. Sam Houston got a 6-RBI game from Corcoran, but Jace Martinez was the only Bearkat to finish with multiple hits as he had two of SHSU's nine in the game.
The Kats did draw 13 walks, but issued 14 of their own across 10 pitchers used. Jakob Holzer was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-4 after giving up a run on a pair of opposite-field hits in the 10th. He finished with a team-best four strikeouts while Kade Neuenschwander had three punchouts in 2.0 shutout innings of late relief.

The Kats now host Delaware for a crucial 3-game series this weekend, beginning Friday night at The Don. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with each game set to be aired on ESPN+.
