Sam Houston enters its first-ever meeting with Delaware on the verge of clinching a berth in the CUSA Tournament. The Kats currently lead NM State by a game for the final spot in the 9-team field and enter the penultimate weekend of the regular season with a magic number of five to punch a ticket back to Kennesaw State for the event.
The Blue Hens, meanwhile, kept hopes for extending their season alive last week when they defended their home turf with a sweep of FIU. Delaware comes in with just a record of 5-19 in the league and would need at least a series win over the Kats to avoid elimination from contention for the CUSA Tournament.
SERIES vs the BLUE HENS
- This will mark the first-ever meeting between the Bearkats and Blue Hens on the diamond. Delaware is in its first season in Conference USA
NOTES
- Sunday will serve as Senior Day for the trio of Zak Johnson, Ty Marthiljohni and Cole Marthiljohni
- Friday will also likely mark the last start at The Don for staff ace Ryan Peterson, who is currently rated by MLB Pipeline as the No. 79 prospect for the 2026 MLB Draft. Peterson currently leads CUSA with 94 strikeouts and needs six more to become the fifth Kat with 100 Ks in a single season and seven more to become the 10th with 200 in a career. SHSU' Division I record for single-season strikeouts is 110 (Hayden Wesneski - 2019) and all-time record is 117 (Albert Choate - 1965)
Â
- Peterson's projections put him in the realm of being the highest drafted pitcher in Bearkat history. Currently, Kevin Renz holds that spot when he was selected in the second round with the 54th overall pick by the Chicago White Sox in 1984. The last Kat pitcher drafted in the top five rounds was Cody Dickson in 2013 when he was chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates (Rd 4, Pick 119)
Â
- The freshman offensive combo of Wes Baker, Cade Corcoran and Kirby Orth has been key to the Kats' offensive production in 2026. The trio has combined for 15 homers and 75 RBI with no other school in CUSA getting more than six home runs and 40 RBI from its freshman class this season
- Baker (8 HR, 35 RBI) and Corcoran (6 HR, 32 RBI) currently rank Nos. 1 and 2 among CUSA freshmen in homers and RBI, while Baker's eight home runs has pulled him into a tie with Andrew Fregia (2016) for the SHSU single-season freshman record
Â
- Sam Houston enters the weekend with 105 stolen bases on the year. That mark leads CUSA and has the Kats over the century mark in swipes for the second time in four seasons. The Kats have only hit the century mark in steals twice since 1987 with 102 steals in both 2017 and 2023. This is the most steals for a Kat squad since getting 128 in 1987. The program record is 150 in 1986
Â
- They have four players - Jeric Curtis, Hunter Alvord, Jace Martinez and Caleb Cotton - with 17+ steals, led by Curtis' 22. The Kats have never had a team with four players with 20 stolen bases in a single year, and with eight more steals Curtis would become just the fifth player in Bearkat history with 30+ steals in a season and the first since Bryce Johnson set the program's Division I record with 33 in 2017
