Â
It is the first of five consecutive games at Don Sanders Stadium for Sam Houston, a welcome change after dropping four consecutive games on the road last week to No. 4 Texas and Kennesaw State. The Kats will be looking to sweep the home-and-home midweek series from the Cardinals in 2026 after already picking up a 7-4 win in Beaumont on March 17.
Â
Sam Houston is 5-7 in midweek games in 2026 but has won just one of its last six midweek games since a 7-5 win over UT Arlington on March 24.
SERIES vs the CARDINALS
- Sam Houston holds a 76-68-1 all-time record against Lamar after its victory in Beaumont earlier this year
- The Kats had won 11 in a row from 2016 to 2021 over Lamar, but the Cardinals have owned the edge of late with six wins in the last nine meetings
NOTES
- The Bearkats have homered in 14 of their last 16 games with 22 total in that span. They had just 16 long balls in the first 34 games of the season
- A lot of that has come from freshman Wes Baker who has five home runs and 20 RBI over 13 games played since April 12. He now leads the team with 33 total RBI, including nine multi-RBI games and a 7-RBI game vs Texas which is a new SHSU single-game record for a freshman
Â
- Sam Houston enters the week with exactly 101 stolen bases on the year. That mark leads CUSA and has the Kats over the century mark in swipes for the second time in four seasons. The Kats have only hit the century mark in steals twice since 1987 with 102 steals in both 2017 and 2023 with the school record being 150 stolen bases in 1986
Â
- They have four players - Jeric Curtis, Hunter Alvord, Jace Martinez and Caleb Cotton - with 15+ steals, led by Curtis' 22. With eight more steals, Curtis would become just the fifth player in Bearkat history with 30+ steals in a season and the first since Bryce Johnson set the program's Division I record with 33 in 2017
