HUNTSVILLE – Caleb Cotton delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Sam Houston Bearkats a 5-4 win over Delaware on Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium, clinching the weekend over the Blue Hens.
It was the first walk-off win of the season for the Bearkats (22-29, 11-15 CUSA) and puts Sam Houston in position to clinch a berth in the CUSA Tournament with a win in the series finale on Sunday.
Cotton's single was his second hit of the game on a day in which he reached base five times, drawing a trio of walks in addition to his two hits. The Kats had erased a 3-0 deficit with a 4-run fifth inning but needed the ninth-inning heroics after Delaware's (17-33, 5-21 CUSA) Jeremy Wolf tied the game with an opposite-field solo homer in the eighth.
The Kats did their final inning work with two outs after a double-play ball had wiped out a leadoff single by Ryan Franden. But Cade Corcoran drew a walk to extend the inning and Easton Dean beat out an infield single to set it up for Cotton who drilled a pitch up the middle to plate pinch runner Parker Blackman with the winning score.
Tyler Ryden allowed three runs over 5.0 innings in the start and Jonathan Anders struck out a pair in 2.2 innings, but it was freshman Gabe Winans who moved to 2-0 on the year with the win. He struck out a pair in 1.1 innings of work.
Sam Houston had chances in the early going but was not able to cash in until the fourth when it scored four times on just two hits in the inning. Cotton's first RBI of the day got the Kats on the board with bases-loaded free pass. Hunter Alvord then got an RBI with an infield hit that was compounded by a Blue Hen error and a wild pitch later got the fourth run home.
