TCU edges women's basketball 89-75

FORT WORTH?Conroe freshman Britni Martin scored a season best 19 points and Brittany Brooks added 16 points for Sam Houston State as the Bearkats fell to No. 24 Texas Christian University 89-75 Sunday evening at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

 

The Horned Frogs used a balanced scoring effort to run its season record to 4-0 as each of the 11 players who saw action totaled at least three points, with six players scoring at least eight.

Lydia Gonzales added 13 points and Whitney Smith scored 10 to give the Bearkats four players in double figures.

 

Sam Houston State got on the board first with the game's first basket, then TCU led the rest of the way. The Frogs  ran out to a 20-point lead at the half, 44-24, before joining SHSU in a shootout in the second half. The Bearkats totaled 51 points after halftime to the Frogs' 45. While SHSU recorded eight more field goals in the period, TCU did its damage at the free-throw line, where the squad went 22-of-28 in the half for a 30-of-39 effort for the game.

Three Frogs reached double figures Sunday, including Helena Sverrisdottier, who led the team for the third consecutive outing with 17 points.

The Frogs built their early lead by taking advantage of Bearkat mistakes. SHSU turned the ball over 16 times in the opening half, which resulted in 20 points. Mangum recorded a team-season-high four steals, all of which came in the first period. As a team, the Frogs totaled a season-high 15 thefts.

TCU started to build its early lead just over four minutes into the game with a 12-1 run to go up 18-11. After a stretch of five points by Sam Houston cut the lead to two, TCU went on a 15-2 run to push the lead to 15 points.

 

The Horned Frogs led 44-24 at intermission. Sam Houston outscored TCU 51-45 in the second period.

 

Sam Houston State's next action is games Friday and Saturday at Moody Coliseum in Dallas as the Bearkats take part in the SMU Women's Classic.
