Men's golf 4th in first 2009 tournament

ARLINGTON -- The Sam Houston State men's golf team fired the third lowest final round score to jump from seventh place to fourth in the final round of the University of Texas at Arlingtion Invitational at the 7,290-yard par 72 layout at Waterchase Golf Club.
Rice won the team championship with a 54-hole total of 858. Host UT-Arlington was runner-up with an 860 score followed by Wichita State in third at 872 and the Bearkats fourth at 880. The tournament field consisted of 18 teams.
Bearkat junior Scott Kelly moved up to third in the individual medalist competition, shooting a three-under final round of 69 to finish with a 73-71-69--213 total. Dustin Garza of Wichita State won the individual trophy with a 68-70-70--208 score. Michael Buttacavoli of Rice was the individual runner-up with a scorecard of 70-68-72--210.
The tournament marked the first action of the 2009 fall schedule for the Sam Houston State men's golf team.
Other Sam Houston finishes included Beau Willis 36th 71-74-79--224, Fergal Rafferty 40th 79-73-73--225, Ryan Howard 40th 73-76-76--225, and Garrett Driver 82nd 77-83-74--234.
The Bearkats finished ahead six Southland Conference teams. Following Sam Houston in the standings were Texas St. 883, UC-Irvine 884, North Texas 886, New Orleans 887, Louisiana Tech 888, Central Arkansas 896, Oklahoma Christian 897, Stephen F. Austin 901, UTA Orange 906, Western Kentucky 907, UC-Riverside and Houston Baptist 917, UTSA 920, McNeese State 923 and Nicholls 959.
