Golf ties Rice at Louisiana Tech

Choudrant, La. -- Host Louisiana Tech took the team championship while the Sam Houston State men's golf team tied with the Rice Owls for sixth place in the sixth annual Squire Creek Intercollegiate Classic Monday and Tuesda.
The 54-hole event was played on the par 72, 7,105-yard layout at Squire Creek Country Club.
Kort O'Leary was the top finisher for the Bearkat men, placing 24th individually with a 12-over score of 72-73-83--228.
Other Sam Houston finishes included James Glenn 28th 74-78-77--229, Albert Miner 37th 76-78-78--232, Jeff Litwak, 42nd 84-78-71--233 and Blaine Weiterman 46th 81-75-79--235.
Horacio Leon of Southeastern Louisiana was the individual medalist with an eight-under score of 72-67-69--215. Michael Whitehead of Rice was the runner-up with a 66-78-71--215 total.
Louisiana Tech won the team championship for the second time in the last three years, firing a score of 297-287-290--874. Southeastern Louisiana was runner-up one stroke back at 875, followed by Jacksonville State 894, Southern Mississippi 901, Missouri-Kansas City 906, Sam Houston and Rice 912, Nicholls 919, McNeese State 921, Arkansas State and Troy 925 and Houston Baptist 956.
The tournament was the third event of the fall men's golf schedule for Sam Houston. The Bearkats will make their only home appearance of the 2010-11 school year next Monday and Tuesday, October 11-12, when Sam Houston hosts the Harold Funston Invitational at Raven Nest Golf Course.
