Caleb Smith started and went seven innings to lead the
Bearkats to a 4-2 win over Baylor in Waco Tuesday. The lefty allowed just two
runs on six hits while striking out five.
Smith, who has struggled with control this season, did not
issue a walk in the game. The junior from Huntsville had to work out of a few
jams as the Bearkat defense committed four errors in the game.
Left fielder Luke Plucheck got the scoring started with a solo homerun to left
field in the top of the first. Shortstop Carter Burgess singled to make the
score 2-0 after walks from designated hitter Hayden Simerly and right fielder
Ryan O'Hearn.
Baylor got one run back in the bottom of the first. The
Bears leadoff with singles and were moved over on a sacrifice bunt. Cleanup
hitter Steve DalPorto then hit an RBI groundout to make the score 2-1.
The Bears tied the game 2-2 in the third after a leadoff
double was sacrificed to third and scored on a sacrifice fly. Plucheck made an
outstanding catch on the play to prevent it from being a hit.
After the third inning Smith pitched four consecutive
scoreless innings to end his day. He would have to work around errors in the
fifth and sixth innings.
Sam Houston retook the lead, 4-2, in the fifth inning. Second
baseman Jessie Plumlee was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on an error on a
pickoff attempt and moved to third on a wild pitch. Plumlee scored on a single
by center fielder Colt Atwood.
Catcher Anthony Azar was intentionally walked with two outs.
Ryan O'Hearn made the Bears pay with a single up the middle to score the speedy
Atwood from second.
O'Hearn was the only Bearkat with two hits as he went
2-for-3 with a walk and one RBI. Atwood, Plucheck and Burgess each had one hit
and one RBI.
Jason Simms relieved Smith to start the eighth and worked
around a single and an error to keep Baylor off the board. Simms pitched a
perfect ninth inning with on strikeout to secure the win and register a save.
The Bearkats will host Baylor at Don Sanders Stadium
Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
