BRYAN, Texas -- The Sam Houston State men's golf team fell from second into a four-way tie for fourth on the final day of the weather-shortened Miramont Invitational. The Bearkats and co-host Rice Owls were tied with Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas State.
Houston won the event with a 565 (-11), 16 strokes ahead of UTSA. Columbia edged the Bearkats for third place by one stroke. The fourth-place foursome finished two strokes ahead of Southeastern Louisiana in ninth.
ULL's Louis Kelly claimed the medal at the inaugural event with a 138 (-6), one stroke ahead of UH's Roman Robledo.
Senior Zach Cabra was the Bearkats' only top-10 finisher. He was tied for fifth after going three under for the tournament. The McKinney product birdied five holes in Tuesday's second round.
JT Taylor shot a 72 in the first round and was in the hunt, but his 77 on Tuesday dropped him to 30th place. Andrew Ertel (74-76-150) finished tied for 37th and Klein Klotz (73-79-152) and Logan Boatner (77-75-152) were tied for 47th.
Freshman Jake McCrory, playing as an individual, had a solid tournament and was tied for 28th. His second-round 73 was the second best score of the day by a Bearkat, behind Cabra's 70.
Dennis Reiner finished tied for 63rd as an individual.
Sam Houston wraps up its fall slate next week on Oct. 20-21 at the New Mexico State Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M.
