HUNTSVILLE -- The Sam Houston State women's golf team finished as runners-up to Houston Baptist at the Harold Funston Intercollegiate at Raven Nest Golf Club. The Bearkats were led by a top-10 finish by freshman Sarah Black.
The Kats had a strong start to the tournament and led after the first round but a stumble in the second round and a surge by the HBU Huskies saw SHSU finish 13 strokes back.
Black had her best performance so far in her young collegiate career. She fired a first-round 73, a second-round 74 and finished with a 76 in the final round.
“Going into the tournament and knowing where you want to place the ball and where you want to be on the green makes things a lot easier,” Black said. “The weather just got us out of our groove a bit. It was a bit of a downer to start playing and then have to stop.”
Western Texas College finished third, Southland opponent A&M-Corpus Christi was fourth and Texas-Pan American rounded out the top-5. Tyler Junior College was sixth, Texas Southern was seventh and St. Thomas was eighth.
Alisa White also finished in the top-10 for the Bearkats. She was strong in the first and third rounds but was held back by an 81 in the second round.
Paige Nelson, who got off to a blistering start to the season, cooled off a bit and finished tied for 12th. Celeste Lo finished tied with Nelson in 12th place. Nicole Budnik rounded out the performances for the Kats in 16th place.
Sam Houston has finished either first or second in three tournaments over the last three weeks. The Bearkats won the ORU Shootout last week and finished runner-up two weeks ago at the ULM Fred Marx Invitational.
Bearkat Abigayle Corson competed as an individual and finished tied for 25th.
After a week off, the Kats will close out the fall schedule at the UAB Fall Beach Bash in Pensacola, Fla, Oct. 27-28.
