HUNTSVILLE -- Zach Cabra and the Bearkat men's golf team defended their titles at the Harold Funston Intercollegiate played at Raven Nest Golf Course. Sam Houston has won on the men's side all five years of the tournament's existence.
Cabra fired two-under 69s in both the first and final rounds to claim his second consecutive title at the annual home event. He slumped a little in the second round, firing a 72, split over Monday and Tuesday.
“It was a really up and down round. It was a struggle early, then I kind of got it back, then it was a struggle again and I just really finished strong,” Cabra said. “I made a couple of puts down the stretch that really helped me win.
The Bearkats ran away with the team title, beating Tyler Junior College by 25 strokes. League foes Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word finished third and fourth respectively. Western Texas College rounded out the top-five, Texas-Pan American finished sixth, Nicholls State was seventh, St. Thomas was eighth and Texas Southern finished ninth.
All five Kats finished in the top-15 and four of the five were in the top-10.
Sophomore Klein Klotz was paced by a second-round 68 and finished tied for fourth. He has been the Kats most consistent golfer, finishing in the top-15 in each tournament this season.
Senior JT Taylor was tied for sixth after improving in each round. He fired a 73 in the first, a 72 in the second and ended with a 71 in the final round.
Senior Logan Boatner was tied for 10th and would have hoped to finish higher. He fired a second round 68 and was leading the tournament before he shot a 78 in the final round.
Sophomore Andrew Ertel was 13th after a solid 71 in the third round.
“I'm really pleased with the guys getting their second win in a row,” head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “We got off to a slow start in the first round and then shot two rounds under par. This team is just really fun to watch play. This was as hard as the course has ever played for us, but the guys adjusted and shot under par in the last two rounds.”
Bearkats Jake McCrory (25th), Dennis Reiner (34th) and Andrew Johnson (42nd) all competed as individuals.
The Bearkat men will be hosts again next week in Bryan for the Rice/SHSU Miramont Invitational at Miramont Country Club. SHSU will finish the fall slate a week later at the New Mexico State Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
