The Sam Houston women's bowling team, ranked No. 6 in the 2015-16 preseason rankings, will host a special preseason exhibition with Louisiana Tech, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern Sunday afternoon at the new Triple J Lanes in Livingston, Texas.
The exhibition will feature three matches beginning at 12 noon. Doors at the Triple J Lanes will open at 11:30 a.m. with teams to begin pre-match practice at 11:45 a.m.
Triple J Lanes is located at 6900 West Highway 190 in Livingston.
Sam Houston returns six players from its squad that reached the NCAA semi-finals for the second year in a row last April. The Bearkats rolled up a dual match record of 91 wins and only 49 losses and finished the year with a No. 5 national ranking.
Beginning its sixth season of competition, the Kats have been ranked in every national poll since they debuted in the October 2010 rankings in Sam Houston's inaugural season. Each of their five seasons, Sam Houston has finished among the top 10. They have been selected to the NCAA Elite Eight tournament four of those five seasons, winning the NCAA National Championship in 20014.
Three members of the national championship team – Erin Brown, Anna Groce and Janine Kuwahara – along with 2014-15 letter-winners Carrie Hopkinson, Heather Penatzer and Stephanie Zavala return this year.
“I think this year we're stronger than we've ever been,” Groce said. “There's not a big difference from the strongest player to the weakest and there's not a weak player on the team.”
Sam Houston begins regular season action next Friday through Sunday, October 16-18 at the Tulane Invitational in New Orleans.
Two newcomers, transfer Randi Speiler and freshman Madysen Keller, join the team this year.
“We have three outstanding teams coming in for the exhibition,” Head coach Brad Hagen said, “It's going to be a lot of fun and a great way to start the season.”
