Tennis opens 2021 season Sunday

HUNTSVILLE — After a 10-month layoff, the Sam Houston State women's tennis team returns to action Sunday when they host Prairie View A&M for a dual match doubleheader at the McAdams Tennis Center.

The first match is set to begin at 11 a.m., followed by the second at 3 p.m.

The Bearkats were in contention for their first Southland Conference championship last spring when the season was abruptly canceled in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Sam Houston was 4-0 in league play.

Reigning conference Player of the Year Sahaja Yamalapalli enters her junior campaign with a 13-2 top-flight record in conference action in her career to lead the Bearkats. She was 11-2 overall in dual matches last season and 3-1 in SLC play.

Sam Houston also returns junior Karla De La Luz Montalvo who went 5-4 in dual match No. 3 singles action as a last season and was 2-1 in the SLC, and sophomore Isidora Zivkovic who was 8-4 in dual match singles in the No. 2 spot as a junior, going 3-1 in the Southland Conference.

Junior Roos Gerritsen was 3-1 in dual match singles in 2020, going 2-1 at No. 5 and 1-0 at No. 6 in the SLC, and senior Constandena Nicolaou went 7-4 in singles action last season and was 1-0 at No. 3 and 2-0 at No. 5 in the SLC. Sophomore Petra Kaszas went 1-2 in No. 6 singles and was 5-5 in doubles play, going 2-1 in Southland Conference action, and redshirt freshman Ryli Ruffin is also expected to make an impact for SHSU this season.

New to the Kats this season are freshmen Andrijana Brkic from Belgrade, Serbia, and Sunskrithi Damera and Sahithi Vutukuru both of Hyderabad, India.

Sam Houston is scheduled to play 10 nonconference matches before entering league play with a home match against New Orleans on Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.

Spectators are allowed at Bearkat home matches this season and must adhere to the following McAdams Tennis Center COVID protocols.
