HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston baseball team took the nightcap of a doubleheader with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Bearkats will try to secure the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the series finale. The game can be viewed on GoBearkats.com.
Game 1
A&M-Corpus Christi 12, Sam Houston 6
The Bearkats were in good position to get the first game in their favor, scoring five runs in the first three innings, while starting pitcher
Matt Dillard retired each of the first nine hitters he faced; however, the Islanders' Luke Marbach led off the fourth inning with a solo home run and that sparked the AMCC offense the rest of the way.
The Islanders went on to score six runs in that inning and 11 unanswered runs over the next three frames, opening the game up on a 3-run home run by Itchy Burts in the top of the sixth.
Sam Houston had gotten four runs in the first inning on 2-out hits singles by
Trent Touchet and
Clayton Chadwick, along with a 2-run triple by
Mason Schulz.
Chadwick finished with a pair of RBI for the game, while
Colton Cowser went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI of his own.
Sam Houston got to Islander starter Hayden Thomas, chasing him in the third inning, but reliever Jaime Ramirez picked him up and earned his first win of the season, throwing the final 4.2 innings with just one run allowed.
Game 2
Sam Houston 9, A&M-Corpus Christi 4
Corbin Vines homered and finished with three hits as the Bearkats put together three multi-run innings to take down the Islanders in the nightcap.
Vines was one of four Kats with multiple hits in the game, but it was
Blake Faecher's first homer of the season that surged the Kats ahead in the second inning. The junior took Islander starter John Gaddis' first pitch down the left-field line for a 2-run shot that gave SHSU a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Anthony MacKenzie picked up an RBI on a bunt single three batters later to push the lead to 3-1.
Vines made it 4-1 with his solo homer to lead off the fifth, and the Kats added two more on a double by Cowser and a pair of Islander errors later in the inning. Cowser finished with a pair of hits and two runs scored while Faecher, Vines and
Gavin Johnson all had multiple hits and RBI.
On the mound,
Dominic Robinson continued to be a steady hand, earning his first win with 5.0 innings. The senior allowed just one run and walked none while striking out four before giving way to
Lance Lusk who went the remainder of the way for his second save of the season.
