HOUSTON – Paul Chaplet had his best round of as a Bearkat on Tuesday and ran away with the medalist honors, as the men's golf team took the title at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic.Â
Â
Chaplet missed the school record by one shot, shooting a 63 to win the tournament by six shots. He started off the day with birdies on three of his first four holes and after a bogey on No. 5, he followed with an eagle.
Â
Chaplet made the turn at 6-under and then birdied the next three holes to get to 9-under through the first 12 holes. He had a chance to equal or break the single round scorning record of 62 set by Zach Cabra, but bogeyed the final hole of the day.
Â
It was part of a dominant performance by the Bearkats, who left no doubt, winning the tournament by 12 strokes. The 17-team field included three ranked schools.  Â
Â
William Holcomb, who led the tournament heading into the final round, shot a 72 and finished as the runner up. Luis Carrera fired the second-best round of the day for the Kats, shooting a 68 and finished tied for 4th.Â
Â
The 9-under score equaled the best score in relation to par set by Cabra in 2014 and Garrett Driver in 2012.Â
Â
The win is the first team title of the season for the Bearkats. They will be back in action next week at the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational at Walden on Lake Conroe.Â
