MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Sam Houston men's golf team saved their best round for last at the K-State Wildcat Invitational, shooting a tournament low round of 280 at Colbert Hills on Tuesday to win their opening tournament of the season.
Playing with three newcomers to the squad, the Kats were run-away winners, beating the hosts of Kansas State by nine strokes.Â
"It was a great start to our season and I'm very proud of the round the guys played today with the lead," said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. "Today was a great day for us and we wanted to keep momentum in our program. We challenged ourselves last night with how we wanted to play and the team we want to be. With the lead, we wanted to look forward and have a goal of what we would do today, win or lose."
Sam Houston was led on Tuesday by Ting-Wei Hsieh, who shot a career low round of 66 on Tuesday to vault 22 spots up the leaderboard to finish 8th. Hsieh played a nearly flawless round, playing his first 17 holes at 7-under par, without a bogey. He didn't drop a shot until his final hole of the day. The 66 was the low round of the tournament in the field of 75 golfers.Â
Chad Sewell, playing in his first tournament as a Bearkat after transferring from UTSA, had a strong showing. The senior from Conroe shot 4-under for the tournament, finishing in a tie for second place.
Also with a top 10 finish was Grayson Blunt, taking 6th. He was steady all week, shooting even par for the tournament after a round of 72 on Tuesday.Â
A fourth Kat made the top 10, with freshman Bret Gray closing the tournament in 9th after a final round 71.Â
"Four players in the top 10 shows our competitive depth and we've got to keep getting better," Kieschnick said. "The guys played well and trusted that the way we play leads to tournament wins."
Tristan Renaud closed the tournament shooting an 80 on Tuesday and was tied for 47th. Jack Randle, who was playing as an individual, shot a 76 and finished 38th.
