HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston tennis team made a statement to open Western Athletic Conference play with a commanding 6-1 victory over rival Stephen F. Austin at the McAdams Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Bearkats captured the doubles point as
Megan Basson and
Paula Cerda took down Alkmini Giannakogiorgou and Jenma Cave 6-2 at No. 1, and
Anastasia Khokhlova and Aaliyah Hohman defeated Ksenia Momontova and Elena Bleicher 6-2 at No. 3.
In singles action, Basson took down Giannakogiorgou 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, and
Paula Cerda came out on top of a battle at No. 2 by defeating Momontova 6-4, 6-3.
Sahithi Vutukuru overcame a very competitive match on the third court by outlasting Zala Ule 7-6 (4), 4-6, (7). Khokhlova made quick work of Jenma Cave 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot, while Hohman picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win over Bleicher at No. 6.
The Bearkats will host Abilene Christian on Friday at 1 p.m.
