HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats will take a five-game win streak into the weekend when they play host to the St. John's Red Storm for three games, beginning Friday at Don Sanders Stadium.
Each game can be heard via BSN audio. Fans can hear those broadcasts by going to GoBearkats.com or by downloading the Bearkat Sports app.
The Kats swept Dartmouth one week ago and took down both HCU and UT Arlington in midweek games, but will face a stiffer test in the Red Storm, a traditionally strong program out of the Big East who took down Florida in the opening game of 2024.
The series will bring to a close a season-long, eight-game homestand for Sam Houston which will be followed by eight straight road games beginning Tuesday night at Houston.
SERIES NOTES vs ST. JOHN'S
- The Kats are 0-1 all-time vs the Red Storm.
- The lone game between the schools came on March 2, 2004 when St. John's won 9-6 in Huntsville.
- Saturday's game vs the Red Storm will take place exactly 20 years, to the day, since the last time the schools played.
QUICK HITTERS
- Sam Houston will be going after its third consecutive series win to open the 2024 season. The last time the Kats had three straight winning weekends to open a year came in 2014 when they won home series over both Northern Colorado and Dallas Baptist ahead of winning two of three games at the Minute Maid Classic in Houston.
- Walker Janek and Jeffrey David are the only two Kats remaining to have hit safely in all nine games of the 2024 season.
- Bearkat starting pitching has been solid early on in the year as Sam Houston has had its starter go at least 5.0 innings and exit with the lead in seven of nine games.
- Coach Jay Sirianni's pitching corps has dominated the zone so far in 2024, striking out 68 and walking just 20 hitters in 80.0 innings on the bump.
