NATCHITOCHES, La. – Paula Cerda and
Aaliyah Hohmann picked up the points for Sam Houston Friday in a 5-2 non-conference loss at Northwestern State.
Additionally, Sam Houston was schedule to play South Alabama Saturday afternoon in Natchitoches; however, that contest has been canceled due to weather, marking the Kats' third weather cancelation in the last two weeks. The team's Louisiana trip will close Saturday with a road dual match with LSU Shreveport.
The loss dropped the Bearkats to a 3-2 record during the first two weeks of the 2024 dual-match season. The Demons now stand 2-5.
Cerda defeated Paige Wise 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles. Hohmann bounced back after dropping a first set tiebreaker to close out a three-set victory over Sofi Garcia 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Three of the Kats' losses came in tight three-set battles. Maria Farina edged the Kats number three player Sahithi Vutukuru 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. India Fenieys lost to the Demons' No. 4 player Ayu Ishibashi 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. In the No. 6 position Honoka Umdea defeated Sam Houston's Roberta Sechi (SHSU) 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4.
Megan Basson and Cerda Megan rolled past Sara Erenda and Sofi Garcia 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles. The Demons took the doubles point with narrow victories in the two and three sets. Sechi and Vianne Schwab lost 7-5 in the No. 2 doubles while Linn Svaerd and Vutukuru fell 6-4 at No. 3.
"We had our chances," Sam Houston head coach Rob Hubbard. "We had a match point that would have given us the doubles point and a match point in one of our singles losses. We need to keep working hard and improve each time out."
