Kats headed to Conference USA Championship

HARAHAN, La. — Sam Houston will travel to Colonial Lanes as the sixth seed for the Conference USA bowling championship from Thursday to Sunday.
As the No. 10 ranked team in the country, the Bearkats' double-elimination bracket will begin on Friday against the No. 3 seed Youngstown State. This is the third time in four years that the Kats and the Penguins have faced each other in the opening round of a conference tournament, with Sam Houston having a 2-1 advantage in those matches.
This tournament is the inaugural CUSA Championship after the conference absorbed eight teams from the Southland Bowling League after the 2022-23 season. Conference USA also added first-year program Jacksonville State as a ninth member, and those nine teams will compete for the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Bearkats have been in constant competition with fellow CUSA teams throughout the season. Most recently facing off against the top five seeds in the tournament at the Music City Classic, a tournament in which the Kats finished in sixth place out of 33 teams.
Freshman Noey Sarntong has been a revelation for the Kats, especially down the home stretch of the season. She was tabbed second at the Music City Classic with 1,165 total pins through the first two days. Highlighting this performance was 290 score in game four of the traditional matches which included 11-straight strikes.
Not too far behind her in the Music City Classic was Kaia Gray and Denise Blankenzee. The duo placed 29th and 31st and scored 1,008 and 1,006 total pins, respectively.
Sam Houston will take on Youngstown State on Friday beginning at 9 a.m. Each round of the tournament will be streamed on ESPN+.
