MADISON, Wisc. – Grace Jin fired an even-par round of 72 in the final round of the Badger Invitational on Tuesday, claiming the individual title in the season-opening event at University Ridge Golf Course.
Her effort help lead Sam Houston to a second-place finish at +12 as a team for the week, finishing seven strokes back of Delaware.
Jin led wire-to-wire after an opening round of 69, which included five birdies, put her in front after the initial 18 holes of the event. She gained another shot to par in Round 2 with a 71, birdying two of her final three holes to card the under-par score.
She carried that lead into the back nine of the final round on Tuesday before a two-shot swing on the Par-5 16th hole made things interesting as Delaware's Leonor Medeiros pulled to within a shot of the lead. However, Jin was able to card pars on both Nos. 17 and 18 to hold off Medeiros for the one-shot win.
Jin was not the only Bearkat to turn in a strong performance as Amelia Guo turned in rounds of 73-72-75 to finish in a tie for ninth overall at +4 for the week. Newcomer Victoria Renzi moved up five spots on the leaderboard with a final round of 75 after rounds of 79 and 77 to finish 39th overall.
Other finishers for the Kats include Cari Denson who finished in 50th overall at +18, despite a strong round of 73 in Round 2. Gracie Heinle fired rounds of 85-82-78 to finish 72nd.
Sam Houston will next compete at home on September 23-24 when it hosts the Bearkat Invitational at Bearkat Course.
