HUNTSVILLE — The Bearkats swept two games on day two of the Bearkat Invitational from Austin Peay and HCU on Friday night.

Sam Houston 8, Austin Peay 2

The Governors (5-7) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and held the advantage through the top of the fourth.

The Bearkats (10-4) broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on seven hits to take control. Sam Houston added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to secure the 8-2 victory.

Jordan Peno and Morgan Holliday each recorded a double. The Bearkats tallied 10 hits and struck out just once at the plate.

Kendal Daniel pitched a complete game, striking out three.

Sam Houston shut out the Huskies (1-11) 5-0 behind a strong pitching performance and timely hitting.

After being held scoreless through two innings, the Bearkats broke through in the third. Peno led off with a double, and Veronica Harrison followed with a two-run home run — her fourth of the season — to give Sam Houston the lead.

The Bearkats extended the advantage in the sixth, highlighted by a triple from Kyla Heine. Sam Houston retired the side in order in the seventh to seal the win.

Freshman Abbey Papadimitriou led the team with two hits. Tiffany Sanchez pitched a complete-game shutout, recording a season-high nine strikeouts.

Sam Houston continues play Saturday with a pair of games against Austin Peay at 4 p.m. and Prairie View at 6:30 p.m.
