Kats go 4-1 at Bearkat Invitational

HUNTSVILLE — The Bearkats split their final day at the Bearkat Invitational, defeating Austin Peay before falling to Prairie View to close the tournament at the Bearkat Softball Complex.

The Bearkats (11-5) took an early lead against the Governors (6-8) in the bottom of the third inning when Jordan Peno hit her first home run of the season.

The Kats extended their lead in the fifth, adding two more runs to go up 3-0. The Governors attempted a late rally, scoring two runs across the final two innings, but ultimately came up short.

Amy Abke pitched a complete game, going all seven innings while allowing just three hits and striking out six. The win improves Abke to 4-0 on the season.

Sam Houston tallied eight total hits in the game. Sophia Lundstrom led the way with two hits, and Abbey Papadimitriou recorded her first double of the season.

The Bearkats jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Veronica Harrison hit her fifth home run of the season, which leads the team.

Prairie View (6-7) responded in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs to take the lead. The Kats answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning but were held scoreless over the final three innings.

Sam Houston turned a ground-ball double play in the fourth inning to prevent Prairie View from extending its lead.

The Bearkat Invitational concludes Sunday at 11 a.m. with Austin Peay and Prairie View facing off.

The Bearkats return to action Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. when they host Baylor at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
