HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston women's tennis team renews its 31-year rivalry with the Rice Owls Friday at 11 a.m. at Chuck and Wanda Beckner Tennis Center on campus.
The contest marks the 24th meeting of the pair since the rivalry began in 1997. Seventeen times in that time span the Owls have come into the contest ranked among the top 50 in NCAA Division I women's tennis.
"Year in and year out Rice is one of the top teams in the country," Kat head coach Rob Hubbard said. "It's always exciting for our young ladies to test themselves against such talented opponents."
The Bearkats come into the contest having won three of their last four dual matches. Sam Houston posted victories over Alcorn State, Southern Mississippi and Hardin-Simmons on a swing through the south last week. The Kats won 17 of their 18 singles matches in the three contests.
The Rice match originally was scheduled to be played in Houston but has been moved to Huntsville.
"We're excited to return to our home court after nine matches on the road," Hubbard said. "Everyone is delighted to be back in Huntsville."
Sam Houston has three more road contests left of the schedule as they travel to Tennessee Southern, WKU and Middle Tennessee in early March. The Kats will complete their 2026 regular season slate with contests with Stephen F. Austin, Louisiana Tech, Missouri State, NM State and Kennesaw State in Huntsville.
