STILLWATER, Okla. – Ryan Peterson struck out a career-high 11 hitters but the Sam Houston offense struggled to get going in a 5-1 loss to Oklahoma State in the series opener on Friday at O'Brate Stadium. Â
Peterson was brilliant once again for the Bearkats (4-5) but the offense was held to just one run on two hits, thanks in large part to OSU lefty Hudson Barrett, who was outstanding in his own right. He shut out the Kats through 7.0 innings of his own with 10 strikeouts while allowing just two hits and a walk to move to 2-1 on the season.
Peterson, meanwhile, set a new career high with 11 strikeoutsin just 5.0 innings of work, one week after tying his previous career best of 10 vs UIC; however, despite not allowing a hit until the fifth inning, it was a pair of walks to open the third inning that ultimately proved to be enough for the homestanding Cowboys (6-3) to grab the early lead and drop his record to 0-2 on the year.
He had four strikeouts through the first two innings before walking Evan Saunders and Terrance Bowen on full counts to open the third. A sac bunt moved the up and Alex Conover put OSU in front 1-0 on a routine ground ball.
Peterson responded with four straight strikeouts, including punching out the side in the fourth before running into trouble again in the fifth. The bottom of the OSU order got the rally going again with three consecutive 1-out singles to load the sacks for the top of the order; however, Peterson responded with consecutive strikeouts of Conover and Brock Thompson to keep it a 1-0 game.
That inning proved to be the last for Peterson as Sam Houston went to the pen and the Cowboys got an insurance run in the sixth on a solo homer from Sebastian Norman. An inning later Thompson delivered the big swing OSU was looking for, depositing a 3-run homer into the right-center field bleachers to up the lead to 5-0.
Sam Houston finally got on the board in the eighth, taking advantage of the third OSU error of the game when Ty Marthiljohni reached to lead off the inning and eventually came home on a wild pitch by reliever Noah Wech with the bases loaded. But Wech followed with consecutive strikeouts of Hunter Alvord and Nathan Fink to end the late Bearkat threat.
