LOCKPORT, Ill. — Sam Houston wrapped up the Lewis Flyer Classic on Sunday with a top five finish at the Strike N' Spare II.
The Bearkats placed fourth following the championship bracket portion of the competition. Sam Houston opened the day with a 4-2 loss to Jax State before closing the tournament with close losses to Vanderbilt (4-3) and Maryville (4-2).
The Kats were the No. 2 seed in the championship round after going 9-1 during the first two days of play. Breana Chewens, Emily Hart and Miya Greene all finished in the top 20 in the individual competition on Saturday with Chewens earning all-tournament honors.
"Anytime you're battling for a championship it's a good thing, but the things we were doing really the first two days wasn't there today," head coach Brad Hagen said. "When you're competing against the top two teams in the country and your last round is a top eight matchup, every stick matters, and every mistake is heightened but this group has what it take to compete. We just need to keep the peddle down and keep learning to win at a high level.
"I still believe what we've been doing on our short weeks has been beneficial, and we have to keep putting ourselves in position to win and it'll all work out."
