Bearkats open series with 13-3 win over the Owls

KENNESAW, Ga. — The Bearkats took care of business on the road Friday night, defeating Kennesaw State 13-3 at Bailey Park to open the series.Â
Sam Houston (20-13, 5-2Â CUSA) jumped out early, scoring three runs in the second inning highlighted by a double up the middle from Morgan Holliday.Â
The Bearkats continued to build momentum in the third, extending their lead with a double from Bella Perez and an RBI single to center field by Kyla Heine.Â
Sam Houston kept the Owls (5-21, 1-6 CUSA) scoreless through four innings and added two more runs before Kennesaw State responded in the fifth. The Owls loaded the bases and pushed across two runs to cut into the deficit.Â
The Bearkats answered quickly in the sixth. Heine delivered another single to bring in two runs, and Tricia Yarotsky stole home on the following play to extend the lead.Â
Kennesaw State's Jojo Johnson hit a solo home run in the sixth for the Owls' final run, but Sam Houston responded again in the seventh when Veronica Harrison blasted her 12th home run of the season.Â
Makenzi Jenkins relieved Tiffany Sanchez in the seventh, allowing one hit and closing out the game.Â
The Bearkats finished with 13 hits and did not strike out. Sanchez pitched six innings, striking out five and improving her record to 7-5.Â
Sam Houston will continue the series against Kennesaw State at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bailey Park. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
