HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats could not complete the sweep of WKU on Sunday morning as the Hilltoppers followed a strong start by Gavin Perry to an 8-2 win in the series finale at Don Sanders Stadium.

Perry kept the Kats (14-13, 4-5 CUSA) off the scoreboard for 6.2 innings with a career-high nine strikeouts for the Hilltoppers (15-13, 4-5 CUSA) before Sam Houston was able to scratch the scoreboard in the seventh.

But WKU already led 6-0 at that point and relievers Zach Lyles and Dawson Hall handled the final 3.1 innings to get the Tops in the win column for the first time in the series. The WKU pitching trio held the Kats to just four hits in the game, three of which were doubles Jeric Curtis, Cade Corcoran and Sean Bazmore.

The WKU offense, meanwhile, came to life and pounced on SHSU starter Collin Aloisio for a pair of runs in the first inning and never let up, putting at least one runner on base in all nine frames. In all, WKU finished with 16 hits in the game.

The Kats got their first run thanks to Corcoran's 2-out double in the seventh as he ultimately came in to score on a pair of wild pitches from Perry. One inning later Curtis slammed an RBI double off the left-center field wall to plate Jace Martinez all the way from first base.

Sam Houston has a tough week ahead of it, starting with a Tuesday trip to College Station to battle nationally-ranked Texas A&M at Blue Bell Park. The Kats will then head to Springfield, Mo., for the first time to take on Missouri State in a 3-game set.
