LA Tech powers past Kats, 8-2

RUSTON, La. – The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs hit four home runs and kept Sam Houston at bay on Friday night, clinching the final weekend series of 2026 with a 4-2 win over the Bearkats at JC Love Field.
Trey Hawsey and Wesley Scott each homered twice, including a grand slam by Scott in the eighth to put the game out of reach for LA Tech (33-22, 19-10 CUSA). The Kats (23-32, 12-17 CUSA) and Bulldogs (33-22, 19-10 CUSA) each finished with seven hits, but four of the Dawg's successful swings left the Love Shack while the Bearkats finished 3-for-19 with runners on base and left 10 runners on in the game.
Hawsey's blasts had the Bulldogs up 3-0 after just three innings, but the Bearkats clawed back with single runs on RBI from Sean Bazmore and Jace Martinez to cut the lead to 3-2 at the stretch half of the seventh. Scott got one of those runs back with a leadoff blast in the seventh and an inning later delivered the knockout blow with the grand slam to up the lead to its final tally at 8-2.
Tate Hickman used 65 pitches to go 4.0 innings, but two of his four hits allowed were the homers surrendered to Hawsey, putting him on the hook for the loss to drop him to 2-3 on the year. Jakob Holzer followed with 3.0 strong innings of relief, retiring nine of the 11 hitters he faced with only a solo homer allowed. Mason Murphy threw an inning and struck out two before allowing Scott's final blast.
The Kats had traffic throughout the night, led by a pair of hits from Ryan Franden. Sam Houston also added five stolen bases to their season total, but were also strikeout victims 10 times against Bulldog pitching.
The seventh inning was the Kats' best chance to draw even with Martinez' single, which scored Kirby Orth, cut the deficit to 3-2. A 2-out single and stolen base by Jeric Curtis put runners at second and third, but Bulldog reliever Riley Fisher was able to ring up Cade Corcoran on strikes to end the threat.
LA Tech starter Hudson Rowan left with the 3-1 lead after the fifth and moved to 6-3 with the win, punching out five along the way. After Landon Fontenot bridged the gap, Fisher did the rest of the work by going the final 2.1 innings for his sixth save of the season.

The Kats will look to salvage a game in the series with on Saturday afternoon in the final game of the series. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from JC Love Field and is scheduled to be aired on ESPN+.
