Kats wrap up Lone Star State Invitational

SAN MARCOS — The Sam Houston softball team could not get anything going at the plate to drop the final two games of the Lone Star State Invitational at Bobcat Softball Stadium Saturday.

Ole Miss defeated the Bearkats in five innings in the opener, holding Sam Houston to one hit. Host Texas State scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings to top the Kats in the finale.

The Bearkats return to action Wednesday when they host Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m.

Ole Miss 12, Sam Houston 0 (5 innings)

Ole Miss scored eight runs in the fourth inning to hand Sam Houston a 12-0 loss in the opening game of day two at the Lone Star Invitational at Bobcat Softball Stadium in San Marcos.

The Rebels had a no hitter going in the top of the fifth until sophomore Kyndal Kutac reached on an infield single. The Bearkats' only other runner came in the fourth when senior Megan McDonald reached on an error.

Texas State 10, Sam Houston 3

The Bearkats scored three runs in the fifth, but an early deficit proved to be too much to overcome in a 10-3 loss to Texas State in the finale of the Lone Star State Invitational Saturday.

Freshman Ellie Grill led broke up a no-hitter with an infield single to lead off the top of the fifth. Junior Brooke Malia followed with a single to right-center field and freshman Mika Vento loaded the bases when she reached on an error.

Sophomore Kyndal Kutac ended a nine-inning scoring drought for Sam Houston when she ripped an RBI single to left to cut the Bobcats' lead to 9-1. Senior Brooklyn Devine walked with the bases loaded to score the second run, and senior Megan McDonald made it 9-3 with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Â
