BATON ROUGE, La. – The NCAA Women's golf regional came to an end on Wednesday without a single shot being taken on the course.
Shortly before noon, tournament officials announced to the teams that despite the course being playable, it's not playable at a championship level.
"It's really disappointing that this decision was made today," said head coach
Brandt Kieschnick. "All of these girls have worked so hard this year, and have played in some tough conditions to get here, it's a shame they won't get the opportunity to end their season on the golf course."
With the tournament canceled, the top six seeds will automatically advance to the NCAA championships. The silver lining for the Sam Houston Bearkats is by way of being the No. 3 ranked individual not on an advancing team, senior
Hanna Alberto will also advance to the championships in Scottsdale, Ariz.
"While I wish our whole team would have gotten a chance to compete to advance to the finals, I'm so happy Hanna is going to get this opportunity," Kieschnick said. "She has had a tremendous career here and her play all season put her in position for this."
Alberto will be the first Sam Houston golfer to participate at the NCAA Championship finals. The national championships will be May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz..The final three days of the championships will be televised live by the GOLF Channel.
The advancing teams are LSU, Ole Miss, Baylor, Oregon, Maryland and Alabama. Joining Alberto as an individual advancing is Karen Fredgaard (Houston) and Nataliya Guseva (Miami).
