LAREDO - The Sam Houston men's golf team will take part in the 2025 Border Olympics, beginning Monday, February 17 at Laredo Country Club.
The event, hosted by Houston, will consist of 54 holes with 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.
The course is considered one of the top courses in South Texas with the tree-lined fairways, water hazards, and demanding roughs. The Rio Grande River runs alongside the course creating difficult holes with the border hazard running close to the fairway.
This par 72, 7,357-yard tournament has been played since 1952. The Bearkats have played the event each year since 2013 placing in the top five each season since 2018. Their top finish came in 2019 when the Kats finished second.
Live scoring will be via Scoreboard by Clippd with updating scores throughout the rounds as well as results at the end of each day. The Kats will be part of a 16-team field which includes defending tournament champion Illinois State.
Last year, the Bearkats finished in a tie for fifth with Houston and Michigan, shooting 12 under. Hugo Trommetter led the team with a ninth-place tie firing off 70-69-71, finishing with a tournament score of six shots under par.
He is looking to lead the team again alongside teammates Alex Malanga and Bret Gray, who led the Bearkats in the Bentwater Intercollegiate. The Kats led the tournament with a 4-shot lead entering the second day, but due to rainy weather and tough course conditions, Chattanooga rallied to drive past the Bearkats by one stroke.
The Bearkats have placed in the top three in each of their past four tournaments including titles at the GitRDone Invitational and the Bayou City Collegiate in the fall.
