
Kats close Border Olympics

LAREDO – The Sam Houston men's golf team finished tied for seventh in closing out the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club on Tuesday.
The warmer temperature helped the Bearkats shoot even in the final round as they entered and ended the day with +20 over 54 holes. Gene Chaikangwal and Bret Gray led the Kats by finishing in a tie for 15th. Chaikangwal fired off 73-73-70 to be three over and Gray shot 76-71-69 making him move up quickly with his even score in the second round and -2 in third round.
In the end, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns took the team title, finishing +3 overall. The next closest team to the Ragin' Cajuns was Miami (OH) with +7, followed by Houston and NM State with +9.
Hugo Trommetter and Josh German was the second grouping among Bearkat players for the week and tied for 33rd overall. Trommetter started off hot shooting one under and later shot even in the last round to end with 70-80-71. German shot 72-75-74 with an eagle on the 13th hole.
Ethan Dufresne fired off 76-74-74 finishing up with three birdies and Alex Malanga shot 76-78-81.
The Bearkats will be in action again next week in the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La. The tournament will begin Monday, March 10, and is hosted by Ragin' Cajuns.
