HUMBLE, Texas – Freshman Ethan Dufresne claimed the first individual title of his collegiate career on Tuesday when he took the crown at the All-American Intercollegiate at The Golf Club of Houston.
Dufresne finished at -6 for the 54-hole event, bettering the rest of the field by five strokes. He shot 69-73-68 for the week, carding two of the three rounds in the 60s turned in by players in the field.
His effort highlighted the Kats' week with the team finishing eighth in the 16-team field.
Dufresne entered the final day at –2 overall, two shots off the pace and carded five birdies on his first 11 holes of the day before finally surrendering a shot to par with a bogey on the Par-3 12th. But he responded with two more birdies on his next four holes for six in the round to finish ahead of UNLV's Ben Sawaia and Yale's Sam Davis who were both at –1 for the week.
The round came in windy conditions, with Sam Houston finishing +18 as a team over 54 holes, just two places below No. 16 UNLV. Gene Chaikangwal and Bret Gray shot +3 and tied for 21st overall. Chaikangwal finished strong in the final round shooting even and fired off 73-74-72. Gray played consistent with one over in every round and four birdies in the final round.
In the end, the host Houston Cougars took the team title finishing 20 strokes under par. Behind the Cougars came Troy at 11 under and TCU with three under.
Josh German tied for 41st individually with a strong second round of two under. German finished with 77-70-76 on his scorecard. Hugo Trommetter came just behind him with nine over and tied for 46th. Trommetter led the Kats in the first round with two under and finished with 70-78-77 after the wind hit hard in the last two rounds. Alex Malanga shot +14 with 76-75-79 on his scorecard and tied for 59th.
The Bearkats will be back in action at the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational at Maridoe Golf Club in Dallas. The tournament will begin Monday, March 31, and is hosted by North Texas Mean Green.
