Kats tie up series with 13-5 win over Aggies

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston bats got hot in a hurry on Saturday as Sam Houston took down NM State, 13-5, in six innings of game two of the conference home-opening series Saturday at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Sam Houston (17-13, 3-2 CUSA) fell behind early after surrendering five runs to the Aggies (14-13, 4-1 CUSA) in the first inning. But Bearkat starting pitcher Kendall Daniel was nails the rest of the way, not allowing a run in the final five frames and finishing with seven strikeouts to earn the win and move her record to 5-2.Â
With Daniel holding the Aggies where they were, the bats went to work, surging back into it with four runs in the bottom of the first inning on Tricia Yarotsky's second grand slam in as many weeks. The Kats tied it up an inning later on an RBI single by Bella Perez and Veronica Harrison finally put the Kats ahead in the bottom of the fifth with her 11th homer of the year, a 2-run blast to make it 7-5.
Sam Houston then flexed even further in the sixth, finishing off a run of 13 unanswered runs pushing across six more to get its third run-rule win of the year and second of CUSA play.
Sophia Lundstrom went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI, while Kerrlauhn Deas turned in a 3-for-4 day of her own. They were joined by Perez and Harrison with multi-hit games with Harrison adding three RBI to her season total.Â
Sam Houston will look to clinch the series on Sunday in the finale of the set with first pitch set for 12:30 p.m.Â
